Insanely Cheap Flights – Tricks & Tips
Would you like to learn how to find insanely cheap flights quickly and easily? Today we share our tips and tricks to find cheap flights online, because after all, who doesn’t like to save a few dollars!
Travel can be expensive. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if you could open up some websites and find insanely cheap flights at the touch of a button?
Well, that actually does happen sometimes (we got insanely cheap flights tickets from China to London for 4 for just $USD150 in total), but the thing is, it’s not likely to happen very often. There are some amazing sites out there to help you get the lowest price possible`, but in my hunt to find the cheapest airline tickets possible, I’ve stumbled upon a few tips and tricks that you can use to save a crazy amount of money, and today I’m going to share them with you. If you use the tips I give you, you may just pick up some very cheap tickets as well!
Why do we want to find insanely cheap flights?
Well, you know what, to some, this sounds like a silly question. But I’ve learned over the years that not everyone is on the hunt for the cheapest flights and best deals ever! Some people are more than happy to pay a whole lot more to enjoy a bit more leg room and a little extra service.
But for us, our destination is key – and if I can get my hands on a low-cost airfare, it means I can do more and see more, with the money I save.
Case in point, in Jan 2016 we travelled to United Arab Emirates. One way tickets were around $AUD900 per person… so with a family of 4, I was looking at close to $AUD3600. By utilising the tips and tricks below, we landed in the same destination, but saved around $600, plus we broke the trip into smaller chunks, picked up a housesit, paid for a few nights layover in Bali and still had money left over!I That’s a whole lot more holiday for less than the cost of a direct flight!
It takes a bit of time, and a whole lot of patience, but if you’re a bargain hunter like I am, you’ll have a whole lot of fun along the way!
Be Flexible With Travel Dates
By having some flexibility in your travel dates, you can save more than 50% on your purchase price when buying flights online. Just yesterday I was comparing flights in Europe and on one day the 4 of us could fly for $100, the following day it was over $400!
When using search engines, look for a “whole month” search option instead of a set date. This will give you a chart or a graph of how much the prices vary day by day.
Book Flights Based on Destination Prices
Travel search engines like the ITA Matrix, Skyscanner and Kayak can save you more than you might expect, in just a minute or two of your time, using their inbuilt open destination functionality. By entering a departure location and leaving your destination empty (or as anywhere), you can see exactly where your dollars will take you. We booked a three week jaunt across Europe, visiting Bucharest, Budapest, Berlin and many more, solely based on where the cheapest tickets would take us. 3 weeks, 6 countries, $USD500 for a family of 4!
Book Individual Flights
Instead of booking round trip tickets, look at booking individual legs – that is, book the return trip separately! This can often give you the best chance of picking up some cheap tickets as the airlines regularly charge less than half of the return fair, on a one way ticket! Crazy, I know, but why buy the round trip ticket when you can pay less than full price!
I have booked this way many times and I am always surprised at how much lower the price can be when flights are booked leg by leg.
Use a VPN
If you’ve not yet heard of a VPN (click here for full details), it is a Virtual Private Network that masks your physical location and makes it appear that you are in a different international location. This helps when booking flights as the airlines regularly offer insanely cheap flights to residents of the country they are based from, but increase prices for foreigners! By getting yourself quickly hooked into your VPN, you can set yourself up to appear in the airlines home country, and the savings can be quite incredible! (For full details about VPN’s and our recommendations – read our Guide to the Best VPN Software for Travellers)
Book Flights in a Different Currency
Believe it or not, just paying in a different currency can save an incredible amount of money. Granted your bank will charge you a conversion fee, however this is usually only a couple of percent. I regularly see prices drop by 10% or more, just by selecting a different payment currency! Give it a go -it only takes a few extra minuntes. Compare prices and see what you can save!
Don’t use a Travel Agent
Clearly, I don’t have many friends that are travel agents, or I’d likely be shot for making this recommendation. From experience though, I am ALWAYS able to find more budget friendly options by spending some time and doing the research.
You may not have the time, or care to go to the hassle, in which case a travel agent might be your best friend. But, to be fair, these tips are for those of us that enjoy the hunt, love a good bargain, and are happy to put the effort in to find insanely cheap flights, because there are plenty out there to be found.
Join Secret Flying
I am a huge fan of the online website www.secretflying.com. They are definitely one to follow as they hunt the web for amazing deals, and as a customer, if you sign up for their emails, or follow them on Facebook (check that you turn on notifications) you will be amongst the first to hear about the incredible deals they find!
Find Error Fairs
I mentioned this at the beginning of the post. It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then, airlines make a mistake with a listing, and if you’re quick, you can score insanely cheap flights – on steroids! Secret Flying are my go to for error fairs as well (another reason I use FB notifications).
You have to be quick, and there is always the possibility that the airline might not honor the fair, but you would receive a full refund and be no worse off. However, if it is honoured, you could save a small fortune. Our error fairs from China to London normally cost around $USD550 per person. We paid $150 for all 4 of us, including service fees to fly to the other side of the world! Now that’s an insanely cheap flight and not something you say no to!
Search for Promo Coupons
Promo coupons? Yeah, that’s what I said. Before I buy anything online I always do a quick search for promo coupons. You’ll be amazed at what you find and I have saved money on flights by doing this. Just type the airline and the word coupon or promo coupons, and see what you might save! Insanely cheap flights are super easy with promo coupons – keep an eye out for them particularly leading up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday!
