When looking for things to do with kids in Chiang Mai, making paper from elephant poo certainly wasn’t a consideration – in fact, I didn’t even realise it was a thing! But on the outskirts of Chiang Mai in Thailand, remnants of the hundreds of kilos of food eaten by the average elephant each day, are collected and recycled into paper and paper products, with thanks to the Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park!
Whilst in Chiang Mai, we got together with a bunch of other world schooling families and headed out to check it out.
What is the Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park?
The Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park is a fun day out and a hands-on experience for kids and adults alike. The park, whilst a popular tourist attraction, is set up to collect and recycle elephant poo, turning it into handmade paper that is then utilised to create unique gifts and products that can be purchased in the gift shop.
With free guided tours, you can walk through the park and learn about the different stages of the process, from collecting elephant poo and preparing it, to colouring it and making the paper. At the end of the tour, you are invited to purchase a craft pack and sit and decorate your personalised masterpiece.
Where is it?
The Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park is located about 30 minutes out of Chiang Mai, approximately 21kms away.
How do you get there?
Getting to the Elephant Poo Poo Paper park is very easy by Songthaew. As a group we hired a driver and car and travelled there and back for 400 baht ($USD11/$AUD15), which split between 3 families was quite economical.
What does it cost?
The Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park was very affordable, at only 100 baht ($USD2.75/$AUD3.75) per person. For the time you spend and the information learned, it really was an excellent, budget friendly, day out.

Our Adventure on YouTube
If you can get past the gross factor, the Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park was an awesome day out and in our opinion a must do activity while in Chiang Mai. Beyond being a bit of a laugh as you stand around talking about Elephant Poo, it was actually really interesting to see how it is so easily converted from waste, into a very useable product.
Be warned though, if your visit is anything like ours, it will turn into an afternoon of Poo puns.. how “poorific”!
